The Loan That Turned Into a Life

This message is for a family who borrowed from an uncle in one bad winter and have been working it off for fourteen years across two jobs and one truck, who no longer speak of it as a debt because it is simply the shape of the week

The winter of 2011 was the one where the transmission went and the water heater went and Danny's hours got cut at the same time, all inside about six weeks, which is how it always goes. Rachel's uncle Dale put four thousand dollars on the table at his kitchen table and said, pay it back when you can.

They have been paying it back when they can for fourteen years.

Nobody has ever written anything down. There is no schedule. There is no balance. Every few months Danny does a Saturday at Dale's place, roofing or fencing or hauling, and every so often Rachel takes a check over, and once a year at Thanksgiving Dale says something like, don't worry about it, and everybody laughs, and nothing changes.

Here is what fourteen years of that looks like from the inside. Danny has not had a free Saturday that he did not feel a little guilty about since 2011. Rachel does the math in her head at the grocery store, not about groceries, about whether they can afford to say no to something. Their oldest wanted to do travel ball and they said the season was too busy, which was true, and which was not the reason. They have never taken a vacation.

Do they resent Dale? Not really, and this is the honest part. Dale is a good man who put four thousand dollars down at a kitchen table for a nephew's wife and did not make a speech about it. He would be genuinely upset to know how it feels. That is precisely why nobody says anything, and it is why nothing ends: there is nobody to be angry at, so there is no conversation to have, so it just goes on being the weather.

Here is the day it caught.

Their youngest, sixteen, doing something for school about family finances, asked at supper, "So what's the biggest thing we owe?"

And Danny said, "The house."

And Rachel said, at the same time, "Dale."

And the table went quiet in a very particular way, because their son looked up and said, "That's still going?"

And Rachel said, "It's just what we do."

And her son said, "That's like my whole life," and went back to his food, and did not mean anything by it, and had just said the truest thing anybody had said in that kitchen in a decade. He was two years old the winter of the transmission.

You have a version of this. One hard season that everybody was good in, that quietly became a permanent arrangement, that nobody would defend if it were described out loud, and that nobody can end because nobody did anything wrong.

The Loan That Turned Into a Life

What God put in the calendar

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing for it.

I am not going to tell you what your arrangement is or hand you a verdict on Uncle Dale or whoever your Dale is. I do not know him and I am not going to name him anything. I am not going to tell you to have the conversation and I am not going to tell you to leave it be, because I cannot see your family from here and pretending otherwise would be a lie.

What I will do is show you something God wrote into a nation's calendar, which nobody ever preaches and which is, to my mind, one of the most extraordinary things in the whole law.

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.Leviticus 25:10

Every fifty years. Debts released. Land returned. People who had sold themselves into service went home.

Now here is the part that matters for a kitchen table in 2025. God did not put jubilee in the law because Israelites were greedy. He put it there because He knew something about arrangements. He knew that a person can lend in good faith, and a person can borrow in good faith, and both of them can behave decently for years, and the arrangement will still calcify, because that is what arrangements do when nobody is required to end them. So He required it. He put an ending in the calendar so that nobody would have to be the villain for wanting one.

You are living under a God who has never regarded a temporary arrangement as permanent by default, and that is law rather than sentiment. Leviticus 25:10 puts the ending in the calendar itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a three-thousand-year-old statute into a kitchen where a sixteen-year-old just said something true.

And notice who does the proclaiming. Not the debtor. The debtor does not have to ask. There is no scene in Leviticus where a man in year forty-nine works up the nerve to raise it. A horn sounds across the whole country and the thing is simply over, and the release comes from outside every relationship in it.

You were never meant to carry the job of ending it as well as the weight of living in it, and that is the entire design of the fiftieth year. It is written that liberty is proclaimed throughout the land, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the source of that proclamation matter to a family who cannot see a way to raise it.

Nobody in this story is the villain

Now, careful here, because this is where a message like this goes wrong.

Uncle Dale did a good thing. I want that said plainly. The four thousand dollars was real and it came at the right hour and there was no interest on it and no lecture with it. Nothing in this article is a case against him, and if you finish reading this angry at a generous man I have failed and you should put it down.

You are not standing in front of God tonight as a person who made a bad decision in a bad winter, and Scripture is where that gets settled. Leviticus 25 legislates for these arrangements without one word of reproach toward anybody in them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a law meant for relief from being read as a rebuke.

And the borrowing was not a sin either. Scripture is not squeamish about people needing help in a bad winter. The whole jubilee law assumes people will end up in these arrangements. It does not scold them for it. It just refuses to let the arrangement become the permanent truth about a family.

You are free to be grateful and to want an ending at the same time, and Leviticus holds both of those without any tension at all. The jubilee text never rebukes the lender or the borrower, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps gratitude and honesty from having to compete in a person's chest.

Let me say this now rather than later, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the arithmetic tonight has taken you somewhere dark, or if the pressure in your house has stopped being a burden and started being something heavier than that, do not sit with it alone at the kitchen table. Tell somebody tonight. Your wife, your husband, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you what to do about the money. That is me not leaving you at that table on your own.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than the thing.

It does not ask you to call Dale. It does not ask you to raise it at Thanksgiving, name a figure, ask for a release, or change one Saturday. Those may belong on a later page and I cannot see your family well enough to put them on tonight's.

It asks you to stop believing the arrangement is simply what your life is.

Because that is what has happened, quietly, without a decision. Fourteen years turns a situation into a climate. And what Leviticus 25 says, out loud, in law, is that God has never agreed to that. He wrote an ending into a calendar so that an arrangement could never quietly become an identity.

You are standing inside a story where release comes from outside the arrangement, which means it was never your job to produce it. Leviticus 25:10 has a horn sounding across a whole land, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ancient horn something a family in a farm kitchen can actually hear.

You have already been named as somebody who belongs to a family and a possession rather than to a debt, and that naming did not wait for the arrangement to end. It is written that every man returns to his family in the jubilee, and His Spirit is what carries the intention of that law into a house where nothing has ended yet.

What God does about the four thousand dollars is His. I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. I do not know. What tonight settles is that permanence was never the plan.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, in the truck with the engine off, or standing in the yard. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and the ending was in His calendar before it was in your mouth. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about the arrangement afterward is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I am putting no timetable on Him.

  1. Fourteen years of working it off, you are not a permanent shape and God never wrote you into the calendar. Leviticus 25 says liberty gets proclaimed in the land, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me tonight. I am not calling this the way things are.
  2. Guilt for wanting an end, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God put the release in the fiftieth year Himself so that no debtor would have to be the one to raise it, and the same Spirit who carried that law carries me, so wanting an ending is not a charge against a generous man.
  3. Lord, You proclaimed liberty in the land and You put the horn in Your own calendar, and Leviticus 25:10 is where You did it. I thank You that You never called a hard winter a permanent address, and by Your Spirit I am done treating this as the weather.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
