The Prayer She Stopped Saying Out Loud

Nadia can tell you the date she started asking, because it was the Monday after the second interview, the one she was sure about. March of 2021.

It was a job at first. Then it was a job or anything, honestly, anything with health insurance. Then it was the small apartment she had to give up, and then it was the year in her sister's spare room, and then it was the temp work that runs eleven weeks and stops. Four and a half years. She is thirty-six and she has a business degree and she has stopped putting the year on her resume.

For the first two years she prayed about it out loud every single day. In the car. Walking. At her sister's kitchen table at six in the morning before anybody was up. Specific prayers, honest ones, the kind you would be a little embarrassed to have recorded.

She does not do that anymore.

It did not stop with a decision. There was no night where she got angry and quit. What happened was smaller and worse. Somewhere in the third year she noticed that she had started to feel like a person who keeps bringing up the same thing. The way a friend who has told you the same story four times starts to see it in your face. She began to shorten it. You know what I'm asking. Then, same as before, Lord. And then, mostly, nothing.

Here is the moment it caught.

Her small group did the thing where everybody shares a prayer request, and it came around to her, and she said, "I'm okay, actually. Pray for Marta's mom."

Which was kind, and which was also the fourth time in a row she had passed. And driving home she said out loud, to the windshield, "I'm not going to be that person."

And then she heard it. That person. Meaning: the one who still needs something. The one who has not resolved. And she understood, in the car, at a red light, that she had not stopped believing God could do it. She had stopped being willing to be somebody with an unanswered thing, in front of people, and then in front of God, and then in front of herself.

You have a prayer like that. Not abandoned. Retired. Filed. Something you still want exactly as much as you did on the first day, that you have quietly stopped saying out loud because saying it again had started to feel like a character flaw.

The waiting is in the verse

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, because I can feel you bracing.

I am not going to tell you when your thing is going to change. I do not know. Nobody who tells you they know is telling you the truth, and I will not do it, not even in a gentle way, not even with a hopeful little clause on the end of a sentence. I am not going to hand you a reason for the four years either. I do not have one.

What I will do is read you the first line of Psalm 40 the way it is actually written, because almost everybody quotes the second half and skips the part that would have helped.

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.Psalm 40:1

Look at the order. The waiting is first, and it is in the verse. It is not a shameful preamble that David got past. It is the first thing he says. The Hebrew is stronger than waited patiently, incidentally: it is something closer to I waited and waited. The doubling is in the text.

So the psalm does not open with a man whose prayer was answered quickly. It opens with a man who had been at it long enough for the waiting to be the headline.

You are standing inside a psalm that names the waiting before it names anything else, and the naming is not a criticism of you. Psalm 40:1 puts the long wait in the first clause without a syllable of apology, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off a page and into a car at a red light.

Then the second half. He inclined unto me. That is a physical word. It is what a person does when they lean down toward somebody smaller or quieter. It is the posture, not the outcome. The verse does not say He fixed it. It says He leaned in.

You have been leaned toward, not tolerated, and the leaning happened during the waiting rather than at the end of it. It is written that He inclined and heard the cry, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that ancient posture a present one in a room where somebody has stopped asking out loud.

Nobody in Scripture gets tired of you

Now here is where I want to be careful, because this is the part that would go wrong.

The thing that stopped Nadia was not doubt. Let me say that clearly, because a lot of preaching would aim at doubt and miss her entirely. She never stopped believing He could. What stopped her was a picture she had built of what it must be like on the other end. A picture of God as somebody with a finite patience for the same request, the way people have.

That picture is not in the book anywhere.

You were never in danger of exhausting Him, and Scripture never once puts a limit on how many times a person may bring the same thing. Luke 18 has Jesus telling a story about a widow who asks the same thing over and over and using her as the example to follow, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that parable land as permission rather than as a technique.

Look at how the psalms actually sound. How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? That is Psalm 13, and it is in the book. It was not edited out for being repetitive or ungrateful. Somebody sang that in worship, in public, on purpose, for centuries.

You are permitted to be a person with an unresolved thing in front of God, and there is a whole genre of Scripture written by exactly such people. The psalms of lament are in the canon on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps an honest complaint from feeling like a failure of faith.

And I will say this now rather than later, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If four and a half years of this has taken you somewhere darker than tiredness, or if the thought of another year is more than you can hold tonight, do not sit alone with that. Tell somebody before you sleep. Your sister, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you anything about your job search. That is me refusing to leave you in that car by yourself.
