He Will Not Go to the Barn After Dark

Vernon has done the evening check in that barn since 1994 and he has not done it after dark since the second week of November.

He does it earlier now. He has moved the whole evening around it. Supper is at five instead of six thirty. The dog gets walked before rather than after. If something needs doing in there at eight o'clock he waits until the morning, and twice this winter that cost him, once with a heifer and once with a frozen line.

If you ask him about the new schedule he says his knee is bad in the cold. His knee is bad in the cold. It has been bad in the cold since 2011.

I am not going to tell you what happened in November. I want to be plain about why. I was not in that barn. Nobody who writes anything on the internet was in that barn. And the most reliable way for a man in Vernon's position to be harmed is a stranger deciding, at a distance and with great confidence, what was in there.

So: something happened in the second week of November, and Vernon has not been in that barn after dark since, and he has never said one word about it to anybody.

He is sixty-three. He is not an excitable man. He has pulled calves in the dark alone for thirty years and buried two dogs and a brother and never made a noise about any of it.

Here is the evening it caught.

His grandson, sixteen, home for the weekend and helpful, said at supper, "Grandad, you want me to go check the barn after?"

And Vernon said, "No, I did it already."

And the boy said, "It's only half four."

And Vernon said, "Well, it's done," and asked him about school, and the boy let it go, because he is a good kid.

You know this. Somewhere you used to go, that you have stopped going, and you have built a small set of reasons that are all true and none of which is the reason, and nobody has quite caught you yet.

One clause, and then nothing

Let me be exact about what I am not doing here, because this is the article where being careless would do damage.

I am not going to tell you what was in that barn. I am not going to name anything, and I am not going to describe anything. I am not going to hand you a method, a prayer to say at the door, a thing to do with a threshold, or any technique at all. There is plenty of that available and I am not adding to it, and I would ask you to be careful of anybody who offers you a procedure for a night they were not present at.

And I am not going to leave you more afraid than you felt when this page opened. If you finish it warier of the dark than when you started, I have failed at the one thing this article exists to do.

What I am going to do is read you a verse and then point at what the psalm does immediately afterward, because the afterward is the whole lesson.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.Psalm 91:5-6

Four things named in two verses. Terror by night. Arrow by day. Pestilence in darkness. Destruction at noon.

Now watch what the psalm does with them.

Nothing. It does not describe any of them. It does not explain what they are, where they come from, how they operate, or what a person should do about them. It names four things in the space of a breath and then, for the rest of the psalm, talks exclusively about God: His feathers, His wings, His truth, His angels, His salvation.

That is not an oversight. That is the whole method. The psalm gives the frightening things two verses of naming and eleven verses of ignoring, and it spends everything it has on the One who covers.

You are covered by somebody the psalm spends its whole length describing, while the frightening things get one clause and no elaboration at all. Psalm 91:5 names the terror by night and never returns to it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that proportion off the page and into a farmyard in November.

And notice the opening line: He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust. That is a bird image, and it is a domestic one. It is not a fortress. It is the ordinary, unremarkable covering of something small by something large that has decided to sit over it.

You have been covered in an entirely ordinary way, and the psalm chose the least dramatic image available on purpose. It is written that He covers with feathers and that under His wings is where trust happens, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an ancient covering a present one.

The schedule is not the problem

Now here is the part I most want you to have, and it is not about the barn.

Moving supper to five is not a lack of faith. Waiting until morning is not fear winning. I want to say those in whole sentences, because you have been grading yourself on them for months without ever saying the word out loud.

You are not being measured by what time you do the evening chores, and no verse anywhere makes a man's nerves a test of anything. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps an ordinary caution from being weighed as unbelief.

What has actually cost you is not the schedule. It is the knee.

Ten months of small true answers that are not the answer, given to a wife and a grandson and a neighbor, and the effect is that nobody on this place knows what your November was. And a man carrying something alone in a house with people in it is carrying more than the thing.

You are permitted to say the true sentence to one person, and Scripture treats that as ordinary rather than as a surrender. Galatians 6:2 tells people to bear one another's burdens as normal practice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes another person knowing into a genuine lightening.

And say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. A person who wakes suddenly, frightened, unable to move or speak, is describing something with ordinary medical explanations that are common and well understood and treatable, and a winter of broken sleep is a medical matter on its own. Say it plainly to a doctor this month. That is not instead of God and it is not a smaller answer. And if the winter has gone somewhere darker than jumpy, tell somebody this week: your wife, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is me refusing to leave you standing in that yard on your own.
