Standing For ThemHebrews 7:25

The Chair at His Father's Table

This message is for a man who left his father's house and its terms and still sees the empty chair at that table every Friday in his mind, who is asked every year to come back to it, and who needs to stand for his father without going back inside

Every year, in the week before the holidays, Yonatan's sister calls and asks whether he is coming, and every year he says no, and every year it takes him about three days to recover from the phone call.

He left his father's house in 2019. Not the building. The terms.

What the terms were is not this article's business. It ran the family, it ran the business, it ran who spoke to whom and about what, and it had been running since before Yonatan was born, and he was thirty-six when he stopped being inside it.

His father is seventy-eight. They speak twice a year, politely, about nothing. His father has never once asked him to come back to the terms, because in that family nobody says anything directly, which is a large part of how the terms lasted fifty years.

What he does is send the invitation through the sister.

And here is what Yonatan sees when he says no. He sees the chair. Third on the left, the one with the arm, the one he sat in from the age of eleven. He can tell you exactly what the light does in that room at that hour in December. He can tell you what his father will say when the sister reports back, which is nothing, and how he will say it.

Here is the day it caught.

His daughter, twelve, listening to one side of the phone call, asked afterward, "Why do we never go to Saba's?"

And Yonatan said, "It is complicated."

And she said, "Does he not like us?"

And Yonatan said, "No, no. He loves you," and stopped there, because the next sentence was going to be about fifty years of terms and she is twelve.

You know that. There is an invitation you turn down every year, for reasons that are right, and there is a child asking a straight question you cannot answer, and there is a chair you can see with your eyes shut.

The Chair at His Father's Table

He ever lives

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you to go this year. I am not going to tell you not to. I do not know that family or those terms, and a page that tells a man whether to sit at his father's table is a page that has forgotten it has never been in the room. And I am not going to tell you your father will change, because I do not know that.

What I will do is read you one clause about what Christ is doing right now.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.Hebrews 7:25

He ever liveth to make intercession.

Now, the writer of Hebrews has spent a whole chapter contrasting Christ with the priests who came before Him, and the contrast is not about quality. It is about continuity. Those priests died. They had to be replaced. The interceding stopped and started and stopped again across generations.

And the point of the verse is: this one does not stop.

Ever liveth. Continuously. Without gaps. Not a season of interceding followed by a season of something else.

You are held by an intercession that has no interruptions in it, and Hebrews 7 makes continuity the entire point of the comparison. Hebrews 7:25 says He ever lives to make intercession, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a house on the Friday you are not there.

And notice who He intercedes for. Them that come unto God by him. Not: them who have their family in order. Not: them who go to the right dinners.

You have somebody praying for you continuously whose praying does not pause for the weeks you are not sure what to do about your father. It is written that He ever lives to make intercession for them, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an uninterrupted intercession something a man can lean on in December.

Not going is not not loving

Now let me be careful here, because this is where somebody gets hurt.

Saying no every year is not coldness. Yonatan is not punishing anybody. He is a man who left a set of terms and who knows, accurately, that sitting in that chair is not a neutral act in that family, because the chair is inside the terms and always was.

You are not being accused of hardness, and Scripture never once makes physical attendance the measure of honor. Ephesians 6:2 says honor thy father as a standing command without specifying a table, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a considered absence from being read as a withdrawal of love.

But here is the thing his daughter walked straight into, and children do that.

It is complicated is true and it is also the sentence that has been standing in for something for six years. And the something is this: Yonatan has never once said out loud, to anybody, that he loves his father and cannot sit in that chair.

He has said the second half a hundred times. He has never said both halves in the same sentence, and because he has never said both, a twelve-year-old has had to ask whether her grandfather does not like her.

You are able to hold both halves at once, and Scripture never requires a person to drop one in order to be honest about the other. Hebrews 7:25 has Christ interceding for people whose situations are not resolved, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets love and distance coexist in a single sentence.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the annual phone call has gone somewhere heavier than difficult, or if the three days afterward have started to be a week, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your wife, your sister, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you a thing about that house. That is me refusing to leave you with that phone in your hand by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than a table.

It does not ask you to go. It does not ask you to stay away either. It does not ask you to explain the terms to your daughter, raise anything with your sister, or say one word to your father.

It asks for both halves, said out loud, on the Friday of the empty chair.

I love my father. And: I cannot sit in that chair. In the same breath, out loud, once, in your own house.

And then to name who is interceding, continuously, without gaps, for both of you.

You are entitled to say both halves at once, because Hebrews describes an intercession that continues through situations that are not resolved. That is the verse, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unresolved thing bearable without requiring it to be tidied.

You have been prayed for continuously by somebody who never leaves the room, including in the three days after every phone call. It is written that He ever lives to make intercession, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient continuity into a house in December.

You are not the one who has to hold this together year after year, and the standing in Hebrews belongs to somebody who does not die and does not need replacing. Hebrews 7:25 makes that the entire point of the chapter, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a continuous intercession a rest rather than a doctrine.

Whether that table ever changes, and when, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. What tonight settles is who is standing without stopping.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud at the head of your own table with the candles lit. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and the interceding has not paused since 2019. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about your father and that table is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Invitation I turn down every year, you are not a verdict on my love for him and you never were. Hebrews 7 says He ever lives to make intercession, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Sentence that says it is complicated, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written in Ephesians 6:2 that honor is commanded without one word about a table, and the same Spirit who carried that word carries me, so love and distance can be said in the same breath.
  3. Lord, He ever lives to make intercession for them, and Hebrews 7:25 is where You made the continuity of it the whole point. I thank You that the standing belongs to somebody who never leaves the room, and by Your Spirit I am saying both halves out loud at my own table tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
