At his niece's wedding in April, Tariq stood for about forty minutes with a plate in his hand, three feet from two men he grew up with, and said nothing at all about the only thing he was thinking.
Yusuf and Sami are behind that counter six days a week on the same terms Tariq was on for fourteen years. Same hours. Same arrangement about money. Same uncle. Yusuf is thirty-six and has three children.
Tariq left in 2023. It was not quiet and it cost him a great deal, and about half the family will tell you he was right and about half will tell you something else, and everybody is polite at weddings.
Here is what happened at the plate.
Yusuf said, "You look well."
And Tariq said, "You too."
And Yusuf said, "Come by the shop sometime," which is the most loaded sentence in that family and is also, genuinely, an invitation, because Yusuf misses him.
And Tariq said, "I will."
And that was the whole exchange, and he has thought about it every week since.
He does not want to convince them. That is the part that is hard to explain. He knows exactly what happened when people tried to convince him, which was nothing, twice, over four years. He would not do that to Yusuf.
But he cannot say nothing either, and nothing is all he has ever said.
Here is the evening it caught.
His wife, driving home, said, "You have not eaten anything."
And he said, "I know."
And she said, "Was it Yusuf?"
And he said, "I do not know what to do with it," and did not say anything else for the rest of the drive.
You know that. People you love are still inside it, you have decided not to argue, and what is left is a silence that feels like abandonment and is not, and you have no idea what to do with what is underneath it.

What the Spirit does with what cannot be said
Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.
I am not going to tell you to talk to Yusuf. I am not going to tell you not to. I do not know that family and I am not going to reach into somebody's cousins from behind a screen. I am not going to give a verdict on your uncle, and I am absolutely not going to tell you that those men will come out, because I do not know it and saying it about somebody else's family would be a small cruelty.
What I will do is read you two verses in Romans that are about exactly this and are almost always used for something else.
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26
Read the middle clause. We know not what we should pray for as we ought.
That is not a description of a spiritually immature person. It is Paul, writing about all Christians, stating as a general fact that there are things people do not know how to pray about.
And the answer he gives is not: learn how. The answer is that the Spirit does the interceding, with groanings that cannot be uttered, which is to say in a form that has no words in it at all.
You are covered in the exact place where you do not know what to say, and Romans 8 was written for that place specifically. Romans 8:26 puts the not-knowing and the interceding in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a car on the way home from a wedding.
And notice where the interceding happens. Not somewhere else, on your behalf, at a distance. In us. The groaning that cannot be uttered is happening in the same chest that stood there holding a plate.
You have not been silent for two years, and something has been going up out of you the whole time in a form you could not hear. It is written that the Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a present operation rather than a comforting theory.
Not arguing is not abandoning
Now let me be careful here, because this is where somebody gets hurt.
Tariq's decision not to make a case is not cowardice and it is not disloyalty to Yusuf. It is the considered judgment of a man who knows exactly what being argued at does, because it was done to him twice and it did nothing.
You are not failing your cousins by refusing to do the thing that did not work on you, and Scripture never once makes persuasion the measure of love. Proverbs 25:11 speaks of a word fitly spoken, which is a standard about timing rather than volume, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps restraint from being read as indifference.
But here is what the silence has been doing, and it is worth naming.
Because he says nothing about it, and because he cannot, Tariq has begun to experience himself as somebody who is doing nothing. And a man who believes he is doing nothing about people he loves carries a weight that has no name and no bottom.
The weight is not the silence. It is the belief that the silence is empty.
You have not been doing nothing, and Romans 8 describes an entire activity going on in a person who has no words available. Romans 8:26 has the Spirit at work precisely in the gap, and the Holy Spirit is the one who fills a silence a person has been reading as absence.
Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the two years have gone somewhere heavier than sad, or if the weddings have started to cost you the whole week around them, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your wife, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. And if you ever believe anybody in that shop is in real danger, then the ordinary thing is to call for help where you live rather than manage it alone. That is me refusing to leave you in that car by yourself.
So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than a family.
It does not ask you to talk to Yusuf. It does not ask you to go by the shop, or to stay away, or to work out what to say next time. It does not ask you to convince anybody of anything.
It asks you to bring the thing you cannot say without turning it into words.
Say their names. Yusuf. Sami. Just the names, out loud. And then be quiet, on purpose, and let the wordless part be the prayer rather than the failure of one.
That is not a technique. There is nothing to do correctly. It is a man putting two names into the air and then stopping talking, in front of somebody who does the interceding anyway.
You are permitted to bring something without shaping it, because Romans 8 says the Spirit handles exactly the material a person cannot form. That is the verse, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unshaped thing a real offering rather than a shrug.
You have been interceded for and through for two years, including the forty minutes with a plate in your hand. It is written that the Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient operation into a wedding hall in April.
You are not doing nothing about the people you love, and the silence has never once been empty. Romans 8:26 puts an entire activity inside a person who has no words, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that activity something a man can rest on rather than hope for.
Whether Yusuf and Sami ever come out, and when, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. What tonight settles is what has been happening in the quiet.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the car with the engine off. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and the interceding has been going on in you since 2023. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about that shop, and when, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Silence I keep at every wedding, you are not the whole of what I can do and you never were. Romans 8 says the Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
- Belief that I am doing nothing, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that we know not what we should pray for as we ought, and that the Spirit handles that exact material, and the same Spirit who carried that letter carries me.
- Lord, the Spirit helps my weakness and makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, and Romans 8:26 is where You said it about people who did not know how to pray. I thank You that the wordless part has been the work and not the failure, and by Your Spirit I am saying their names out loud tonight.
