The First Month It Was His

This message is for a man in the first month of holding his own wage after eight years of handing it over, who cannot sleep for watching the balance, and who needs to be met where the provision is real and the trust has not caught up to it

Ruben has never in his life had a month where the money was his.

He is thirty-nine. From twenty-two he worked for a man who paid him in a way that was never quite explained and never quite wrong, and then for eight years there was an arrangement in his family that meant what he earned was not really what he earned, and there was always an accounting and there was always a reason, and Ruben did not fight about it because fighting about it would have cost more than the money.

In April he took a different job. Regular, boring, on the books. The first check landed in his own account on the eleventh of May and nobody took anything out of it and nobody asked him for anything and nobody said a word.

It is the best thing that has happened to him in seventeen years and he has not slept properly since.

Here is what he does. He opens the banking app. He looks at the number. He closes it. He does this, at a conservative estimate, eleven times a day. He does it at red lights. He did it in a bathroom at a wedding. He does it at two in the morning, which is the worst one, because at two in the morning the number is exactly what it was at eleven at night and he opens it anyway.

He is not spending it. That is the thing people assume when they hear the first part. He is not buying anything. He has not bought anything. There is a pair of work boots he needs and has needed since March and he has looked at them online nine times and closed the tab.

Here is the evening it caught.

His cousin's wife, who cooks for everybody and misses nothing, put a plate in front of him and said, "You look terrible. Are you eating?"

And Ruben said, "I'm fine. Work's good."

And she said, "I know work's good. Everybody knows work's good. I asked if you're eating."

And he sat there with a plate of food he did not want in a kitchen full of people, holding a phone he had checked eleven minutes ago, and could not think of a single thing to say that was true and short.

You know this stretch. The thing you asked for arrived, and every person in your life is glad about it, and you cannot rest in it for one hour, and there is no way to say that out loud without sounding like the most ungrateful man in the world.

The First Month It Was His

A day at a time, on purpose

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you the money is safe. I do not know your job or your economy or your family, and a stranger promising a man that his income can never fail would be doing something contemptible. I am not going to tell you what your family was doing all those years or hand you a verdict on any of them.

What I will do is take you to the strangest arrangement in the wilderness, which is the manna, and I want you to see that the strangeness was deliberate.

Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.Exodus 16:4

A certain rate every day. Not a month at a time. Not a barn. Not a granary that fills up so a man can look at it and feel all right about tomorrow.

And when they tried to keep some overnight, it went bad. That is in the next few verses. God built a supply that could not be hoarded and could not be counted ahead and had to be received again in the morning.

You are being provided for by a God who has always worked at the daily rate, and it is the design rather than a shortfall. Exodus 16:4 has Him choosing that arrangement deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a kitchen where a man is holding a phone.

Now, why would anybody design it that way. Because a people who had spent four hundred years in an arrangement where somebody else controlled the food did not need a granary. They needed to find out, forty mornings in a row and then four hundred more, that it comes. The lesson was not in the quantity. It was in the recurrence.

You have not been given a number to trust, you have been given a Person who has turned up every day since the eleventh of May. It is written that He rained bread from heaven daily, and the Holy Spirit is what turns an ancient pattern into a present recognition.

Supply and trust arrive on different days

Now let me be careful here, because this is where a message like this goes wrong.

I am not going to tell Ruben that if he trusted God more he would sleep. That is a sentence that sounds spiritual and functions as a bill. He is not failing to trust. He is a man whose experience of money for seventeen years was that it looks like his and then it is not, and his body has drawn an entirely reasonable conclusion from seventeen years of data, and no amount of theology deletes a conclusion like that in six weeks.

You are not being examined on how quickly your body updates, and Scripture never once sets that as a measure of anything. Exodus 16 has a people who had already seen the sea open still panicking about bread, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a slow nervous system from being read as a spiritual failure.

Here is the true shape of it. The supply arrived in May. The trust has not arrived yet. Those are two separate deliveries and they do not come on the same truck, and the gap between them is not a fault, it is just the gap. Everybody who has ever come out of a long arrangement lives in that gap for a while.

You were given the provision without being required to produce the confidence first, and that order is the whole mercy of the arrangement. Exodus 16:4 has the bread falling on people who complained about it the same chapter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an unearned provision restful rather than suspicious.

And say this now rather than later, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the checking has become something that runs your nights, or if the last six weeks have taken you somewhere darker than anxious, do not carry that by yourself. Tell somebody this week. Your cousin, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. Sleep is a physical thing as well as a spiritual one and it is worth saying plainly to a doctor. That is not me telling you a thing about your money. That is me refusing to leave you at that table on your own.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than the number.

It does not ask you to stop checking. It does not ask you to buy the boots, or spend anything, or trust anybody, or feel secure. If you could produce security by deciding to, you would have done it in May.

It asks you to say out loud, once, what today actually had in it.

Not the balance. The day. Today there was work, and there was a plate of food somebody put in front of you, and the boots are still there tomorrow, and nobody took anything out. Say the day, out loud, in front of God, which is what a person does when they are learning to count a supply that comes at the daily rate.

You are permitted to count one day at a time, and Exodus 16 makes that the actual instruction rather than a fallback for people who cannot manage more. That is the text, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a small unit of counting sufficient rather than embarrassing.

You have been fed on every one of the days since the eleventh of May, and not one of them arrived because you were watching for it. It is written that He rained bread from heaven, and His Spirit is the one who takes an ancient daily rate and applies it to a bank balance at two in the morning.

You are not being asked for confidence tonight, only for an honest account of one day, and the arrangement has never demanded more than that. Exodus 16:4 sets the gathering at a day's rate and no more, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that limit a kindness rather than a restriction.

Whether the work holds, and what next year looks like, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. What tonight settles is who has been sending the day's portion.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in your own kitchen with the light on. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He has sent the day's portion every day since May without any help from your watching. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about next month is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Habit of checking the balance, you are not a measure of God's provision and you never were. Exodus 16 says He rained bread a day at a time on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Verdict that seventeen years handed me, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God fed a people daily for forty years while they complained about it, and the same Spirit who carried that word carries me, so a slow body is not an unbelieving one.
  3. Lord, You rain bread from heaven at a day's rate, and Exodus 16:4 is where You said You built it that way on purpose. I thank You that every day since the eleventh of May has had its portion in it, and by Your Spirit I am counting today out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
