Who He Is on a Tuesday

This message is for a man who stepped out of a role that had held his name for fourteen years and now cannot say what he is at seven in the morning on a Tuesday, and who needs to be met in the gap between what he left and what he has not been given yet

For fourteen years, if you asked Dale what he did, he had an answer, and the answer took about four seconds and it was true and it explained his whole week.

He ran operations for a company with three hundred people in it. He was the one who got the call at six twenty in the morning when a line went down. He had a phone that never stopped and a parking space with a number stenciled on it and about forty people who genuinely needed something from him before nine.

He is not there anymore. It was not a firing and it was not entirely a choice, and the details do not matter, and Dale would tell you honestly that leaving was right and that he had known for three years it was coming.

That was in March.

Here is what a Tuesday looks like now.

He wakes at five forty, because fourteen years. He lies there. Nothing happens. Nobody calls at six twenty, and nobody is going to, and he knows that at five forty-one and lies there anyway until about six. He gets up and makes coffee in a house where his wife is still asleep, and he sits at the table, and there is a period between about six thirty and eight that he has begun to think of as the part.

He does things. He is not idle. He has a consulting thing that is real, two clients, some weeks a lot of hours. He fixed the deck. He drives his father to appointments.

But at seven in the morning on a Tuesday, if somebody stopped him and asked what he was, Dale would not have four seconds. He would have nothing. And that is a strange discovery for a man of fifty-two who has never in his adult life been short of an answer.

Here is the morning it caught.

A man at the hardware store, chatting, said, "You look familiar. What line are you in?"

And Dale said, "I'm sort of between things."

And it was true, and it was a completely ordinary thing to say, and Dale carried it around for a week like a stone in a shoe.

You know this stretch. Out of the thing that answered the question for you, correctly out, and there is an hour in the morning that used to be full and now is not, and no way to say that without sounding like a man complaining about not being busy.

Who He Is on a Tuesday

The cloud decided, and staying was obedience

Let me put down what I am not doing here, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you what comes next. I do not know. I am not going to tell you what God is preparing, because I have no idea and inventing one would be a cheap thing to do to a man at a kitchen table. And I am not going to tell you that your worth was never in the job, which is true and which, said at the wrong moment, functions as a way of telling somebody their loss was not real.

What I will do is take you to a passage nobody preaches, in Numbers 9, about how Israel moved through the wilderness.

And so it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed: whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed. Or whether it were two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining thereon, the children of Israel abode in their tents, and journeyed not: but when it was taken up, they journeyed.Numbers 9:21-22

Read that as a description of a life rather than a travel schedule.

Two days, or a month, or a year. The text specifically names a year of the cloud not moving. A whole year of a nation getting up in the morning with nowhere to go and nothing to pack and no idea when that would change.

And here is the sentence that matters: the children of Israel abode in their tents, and journeyed not. That is written in the same voice, with the same weight, as the marching. Staying was not the absence of obedience. It was the form obedience took that year.

You are in a stretch where staying put is the actual assignment, and Scripture writes that with exactly the same seriousness as the moving. Numbers 9:22 records a full year in the tents as obedience, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a kitchen at six thirty in the morning.

And notice what governed it. Not their planning. Not their readiness. Not how they felt about the delay. The cloud. Something outside the camp entirely, which they did not control and could not hurry, and which was over them the entire time it was not moving.

You have been under the cloud through every one of these mornings, and its stillness has never once been the same thing as its absence. It is written that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining thereon, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an ancient stillness a present company.

The question is not a small one

Now let me be careful here, because a message like this gets clumsy fast.

The thing Dale is going through is not vanity. It would be easy to hear this story and think, a man missing his parking space, and to preach at the missing. That would be a mistake, and it would be a mistake about how people actually work.

A role is not only status. It is structure. It is what tells a body when to get up and what to think about at seven and who to be for the next ten hours. Take that out and something real goes with it, and it goes even when the leaving was right and even when the man is not proud.

You are not being reprimanded tonight for having built a life around something useful, and Scripture nowhere treats a person's work as a temptation to be repented of. Colossians 3:23 has work done heartily as unto the Lord rather than as a rival to Him, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a real loss from being reclassified as an idol.

And here is the specific thing I want to name, because it is the one that stings. It is not the empty hour. It is the four seconds. It is that a man who could always answer the question cannot answer it, and that the not-answering has begun to feel like a report on what he now amounts to.

It is not a report. It is a gap between one assignment and another, and the gap has a cloud over it.

You were never being valued by your ability to answer a question at a hardware store, and God's estimate of a person has never once been organized that way. Ephesians 2:10 calls a person His workmanship before naming a single work, and the Holy Spirit is what puts the order of those two things back where it belongs.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the mornings have gone somewhere darker than aimless, or if the part between six thirty and eight has become something you dread rather than dislike, do not sit with that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your wife, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you a thing about your career. That is me refusing to leave you at that table by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than a career.

It does not ask you to find the next thing. It does not ask you to network, take a role to fill the hour, decide what you want, or produce a four-second answer for the man at the hardware store. Those will come or they will not, and I am not going to hand you a schedule and call it faith.

It asks you to say the two true things out loud, in order.

What you used to be at seven on a Tuesday. And what nobody needs from you at seven now. Both plainly, in front of God, without a hopeful clause stapled to the end of the second one.

You are safe to say the second one out loud, because Numbers 9 puts a whole nation in tents with nothing to do and does not call it a problem. That is the text, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unproductive stretch a legitimate place to be standing.

You have been kept through every one of these mornings, and the keeping has not depended on anything being announced yet. It is written that the cloud remained upon the tabernacle, and His Spirit is the one who takes an ancient stillness and lays it over a kitchen table at six thirty.

You are not waiting for permission to be somebody, and Scripture gave that away before any assignment was ever mentioned. Ephesians 2:10 names the workmanship first, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that order restful rather than theoretical.

When the cloud moves, and what it moves you toward, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or describe it. What this morning settles is what the stillness is not.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud at the table in the dark. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and the cloud has been over this house since March without any help from you. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. When the cloud lifts, and where it goes, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Blank Tuesday morning, you are not a report on what I am worth and you never were. Numbers 9 says they stayed while the cloud stayed, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Shame at having no answer, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that Israel abode in their tents and journeyed not, and the text gives that the same weight as the marching, and the same Spirit who carried that word carries me.
  3. Lord, the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle and they stayed while it stayed, and Numbers 9:22 is where You had that written down without one word of complaint about it. I thank You that stillness over a tent is not absence, and by Your Spirit I am saying both true sentences out loud this morning.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
