Into PromisePsalm 16:6

The Question at His Mother's Table

This message is for a man asked at his mother's table what comes next who had nothing to say in front of everybody and has been chewing on the silence since, and who needs to know the lines have already fallen for him somewhere

There were nineteen people in that yard and Beto has thought about eleven seconds of it every day since.

It was his mother's birthday. Everybody was there. And his uncle, who is not unkind and who has never in his life understood what a room feels like, said across the table, in front of everybody, "So Beto. What is next for you?"

And the yard went a particular kind of quiet. Not silent. Just a small dip, the sort that happens when a whole family is interested in an answer.

And Beto said, "I do not know yet."

And his uncle said, "Well. Something will come."

And somebody asked about the pork and it moved on, and that was the whole thing, eleven seconds, and Beto has replayed it about four hundred times.

He is thirty-four. He came out of an arrangement in his wife's family business in January, and it cost a great deal, and the reasons are not this article's business except to say that everybody at that table knows some version of them.

Here is what is actually eating him.

It is not that he had no answer. It is that when he said I do not know yet, he heard, in his own voice, something that sounded like a man with nothing.

Here is the week it caught.

His wife said in the car on the way home, "You have been quiet since the yard."

And Beto said, "I am fine."

And she said, "You are not, and I know exactly which eleven seconds it was, because I watched it happen."

You know that. Somebody asked you in front of people, and you gave the honest answer, and the honest answer sounded to your own ear like poverty, and you have been carrying eleven seconds around ever since.

The Question at His Mother's Table

Somebody else did the surveying

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you what is next. I do not know. I am not going to give you a verdict on your uncle, who by all accounts is a decent man with a tin ear, and I am not going to tell you what God is preparing, because I do not know it and I will not invent it in front of a man's family.

What I will do is read you a line from a psalm and explain the picture inside it, because the picture is the whole answer.

The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.Psalm 16:6

The lines are fallen unto me.

That is surveying language. In the Old Testament, land was divided by measuring cords, and the cords were used by somebody else, and where they fell decided what a man's portion was.

So the picture is this: a man standing on ground he did not measure, describing a boundary that was set by another party, and calling it pleasant.

He is not describing what he built. He is describing what fell to him.

You are standing inside a boundary that somebody else measured, and the pleasantness of it is not a report on your own planning. Psalm 16:6 uses the language of a portion assigned rather than a portion achieved, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a yard where a question was asked in front of nineteen people.

And notice what David does not say. He does not say the lines have fallen pleasantly because he did anything. He does not give an account of himself at all. He simply reports where the cords landed.

You have never been required to give an account of yourself in order to have a portion, and the psalm reports rather than justifies. It is written that the lines are fallen and that the heritage is goodly, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an assigned portion a present possession rather than a thing to be defended.

What the honest answer actually was

Now let me be careful here, because this is where somebody gets hurt.

I do not know yet is not a failure. I want that in a whole sentence, because Beto has spent five months treating it as one.

It is an accurate statement, made in public, by a man five months out of something that took nineteen people to notice. And what he heard in his own voice was not the truth of the sentence; it was the sound of a man saying a true thing in a family that likes a plan.

You told the truth at that table, and Scripture never once treats an honest not-yet as a shortfall. Hebrews 11:8 has a man going out not knowing where he went and lists him among the faithful for it, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps an honest answer from being reclassified as an empty one.

You have been carrying eleven seconds as though a room full of relatives were the court that decides these things, and no such court exists in Scripture anywhere. Psalm 16:6 has a man reporting a portion he did not measure to nobody in particular, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the jury out of a back yard.

And here is the second thing, and it is the sharper one, because it is not about the uncle at all.

The yet was doing real work in that sentence and nobody heard it, including you. I do not know yet is a sentence about time. It says: this is unfinished, not absent. And it was the most accurate thing said in that yard all afternoon.

You said something with a future tense in it and heard it as a verdict, and the two are not the same sentence at all. Psalm 16:6 speaks of a portion already assigned by somebody who was not consulting the man about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hear their own words correctly.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the five months have gone somewhere heavier than uncertain, or if those eleven seconds have grown into something that sits on your chest most days, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your wife, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you a thing about that family or that business. That is me refusing to leave you in that car by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than a yard full of relatives.

It does not ask you to have an answer for next time. It does not ask you to make a plan, decide a direction, or say anything to your uncle. It certainly does not ask you to go back and improve on eleven seconds.

It asks you to say the honest sentence out loud, on your own, with the yet in it, and hear it properly.

I do not know yet. Said slowly. In a room where nobody is waiting for it. And then to say who did the measuring.

You are entitled to say a not-yet in front of God, because Psalm 16 describes a man reporting his portion rather than presenting a plan. That is the psalm, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unfinished sentence a legitimate thing to bring.

You have had a portion assigned to you by somebody who was not waiting for your proposal, and the cords fell before that birthday. It is written that the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient surveying into a back yard in May.

You are not a man with nothing, and the sentence you said in that yard has a future tense in it that everybody including you failed to hear. Psalm 16:6 calls the heritage goodly before anything has been done with it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an assigned inheritance solid rather than theoretical.

What comes next, and when, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or describe it. What tonight settles is who ran the measuring cord.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the car with the engine off. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and the cords fell before your mother's birthday. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What comes next is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Silence I left at that table, you are not a report on my future and you never were. Psalm 16 says the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Sound my own voice made saying I do not know, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written in Hebrews 11:8 that a man went out not knowing where he went and was listed among the faithful for it, and the same Spirit who carried that chapter carries me.
  3. Lord, the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places and I have a goodly heritage, and Psalm 16:6 is where a man reported a portion he had not measured himself. I thank You that the cords were run before I ever had to answer anybody, and by Your Spirit I am saying the honest sentence out loud tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
