She has turned the lamp back on, and she is a grown woman, and she is annoyed with herself about it.
The sofa bed is made up the way it has been made up for nine nights, since she came to help with the baby. Her sister is asleep upstairs, properly asleep for once, and the baby monitor on the arm of the sofa is showing its little green light and the sound of a baby breathing, which is the best sound in the house. Her brother-in-law is on nights. The dishwasher finished its cycle a while ago and clicked, and she knows that click, and it was not that.
It was not a sound. She keeps going back over it, the way you check a step you have already climbed. Nothing moved. Nothing was cold. She had been half asleep with her phone face down on her chest and the room had felt like a room, and then it did not. That is the only honest way she can say it. It did not feel like a mood. Moods are inside you. This felt like the room, and she cannot explain that, and she is not going to try to explain it to her sister in the morning over the porridge, because her sister has a three week old and no sleep and does not need her aunt seeing things.
So she is sitting up, with the lamp on, doing what people do. She has checked the front door, which she checked at ten. She has looked at the monitor. She has typed a message to a friend and deleted it, because what would it say. She has thought about praying and found she does not know what to pray, because she does not know what she is praying about, and every prayer she can think of sounds either too small or too dramatic. She is thirty-four, she has a mortgage, she reads her Bible most mornings, and she is sitting on a sofa bed in her sister's front room with a lamp on because she is frightened and she does not know of what.
If that is you tonight, I want to say the first thing slowly. You are not being silly. I am not going to tell you what it was, because I do not know, I cannot see your room, and Scripture does not hand me the job of naming it. What Scripture hands me is a great deal better than that. It hands me the name of the One who is Lord over the room, and it hands me a verse about lying down. That is what the rest of this page is: the name, and then bed.

The room has a Lord, and it is not you
Let me name the fear first, because it is the thing on the sofa with you and it deserves to be spoken to plainly. The fear is not really that something is in the room. The fear is that the dealing with it falls to you, at half past eleven, on your own, with no idea what it is or what dealing with it would even mean. That is the weight. Not the unknown thing. The sense that the line is yours to hold and you do not know how.
Scripture takes that weight off you in one verse, and it is not a verse about spirits, or rooms, or the dark. It is a verse about going to sleep.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8
Read the shape of it. Not I lie down because I have secured the room. Not I sleep once I have worked out what that was. You alone make me dwell in safety. Alone. David wrote that as a man who had been hunted through caves, and he put the whole of his safety on one pair of shoulders, and they were not his own.
You are covered tonight, and you are not the one holding the line. The word says You alone, in Psalm 4:8, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that verse a living fact in a front room rather than a nice thing David once said. Being covered was never a feeling anybody was meant to generate. It is a place a person already lies down in.
You were never handed the keeping of yourself, and the psalm removes every other candidate with one word. Psalm 4:8 says thou, LORD, only, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that word a relief rather than a slogan.
Whose name is over the house
Now the name. There is one, and it is the whole of what I am going to hand you to say.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.Philippians 2:9-10
Every name. Above every name. That is a total statement, and Scripture makes it without a list of exceptions underneath. It does not say every knee except in a front room in a house where a baby is sleeping. It does not say every knee provided the person saying it knows what she is talking to. It says every knee, and it puts the authority in the name, not in the nerve of the one who says it.
Here is what I am not going to teach you, and I want to be plain about it because this is the tightest place on this whole site. I am not going to give you a method. No sequence of words, no things to bind, no room to walk round, no oil for the doorframes. Not because those things are wicked, but because the moment I hand you a method I have handed the line back to you, and the whole point of tonight is that it was never yours. A method says: do this correctly and you will be safe. The name says: He is Lord already, and you are safe because of who He is.
You have that name, and it was given to be said and not to be wielded. It is written in Philippians 2:9 as plainly as anything in the letter, and His Spirit is the one who does the bowing of knees; the mouth only says the word.
You are standing under a total statement with no list of exceptions written underneath it. Philippians 2:10 says every knee in heaven and in earth, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unqualified sentence something a frightened person can lean on. Say it as you would say the name of somebody you love who has just walked into the room. Once. In a normal voice. Jesus.
And then, because I keep a shelter and I know what fear does to a body, let me say the second plain thing. If a night like this is happening often, or if you are lying awake most nights, or if this came after a loss or an illness or a stretch of not eating or sleeping properly, please tell your doctor, and tell somebody who loves you, or a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not unbelief. A tired, grieving, unwell body can make a room feel like something, and the same Lord who is over your front room is over the doctor's office too, and He works through both. And if what frightened you tonight is a person, or the situation where you are has become unsafe, then the ordinary thing to do is call for help tonight and let a human being come. Naming the fear to a doctor or a friend is not the opposite of saying the name of Jesus. Very often it is what saying His name looks like the next morning.
Here it is, and it is smaller than the fear told you it would be. Nothing is being asked of you tonight except one word and then bed.
You do not have to identify what happened. You do not have to decide whether it was your nerves or your body or the house or something else, and I am not going to decide it for you, because I cannot see it and Scripture does not need me to. Every knee, above every name. That was settled before you switched the lamp on, and it does not become less settled because you are frightened.
You are safe here, tonight, on this sofa bed, in this front room, and safe is not a feeling anybody is telling you to produce. It is written in Psalm 4:8, thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety, and the Holy Spirit is the one making the written word true where a person is lying down. The line was never yours. It has a Keeper.
You were never put on watch, and Psalm 121 says the Keeper of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. That is Psalm 121:4, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unsleeping watch a real handover rather than a comforting phrase. People who are not on watch are allowed to sleep.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these in an ordinary voice, in the front room, before you lie down. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the only reason a sentence said on a sofa bed carries anything at all: not your steadiness, not your certainty about what happened, but His name in your mouth. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, not the pitch of your voice. And whatever He does with the rest of this night, whether it goes quiet at once or you lie awake a while longer, He may answer in His own way, and neither one is a verdict on you or on the words. He is Lord over the room either way. Say so, and go to bed.
- Front room with the lamp back on, you have a Lord and it is Jesus, and I am saying His name over you once. Scripture says His is the name above every name and every knee bows to it, and it does not say every knee except the ones in this house.
- Sense that the line is mine to hold tonight, put down what was never yours. It is written that He alone makes me dwell in safety, and His Spirit is the one keeping this room while I sleep, so I am done standing guard over what already has a Keeper.
- Lord, You are the Keeper who does not slumber and does not sleep, exactly as Psalm 121 says, and You are Lord over this front room now, in the name of Jesus. I thank You, because Your Spirit is here and I am covered, and I am lying down and sleeping in peace, because You alone make it safe.
