Freedom Is ComingExodus 2:25

The Van With Somebody Else's Name

This message is for a man who has driven his cousin's delivery van for eight years with no wage written down anywhere, who has stopped thinking of it as anything, and who needs to see that God looked at the arrangement and knew it before he did

The van is a white Ford with a hundred and ninety-two thousand miles on it and a dent in the sliding door that Beto put there in 2019 backing into a post outside a restaurant in Escondido. He knows every noise it makes. He knows which route beats the four o'clock traffic and which restaurant will make you wait twenty minutes at the back door and which one sends you out with a plate. Eight years, six days a week.

The van belongs to his cousin Chuy. So does the route. So does the phone number the restaurants call.

What Beto gets is cash. Chuy is not a crook. Chuy is a decent man who is not doing well himself, and every Friday he counts out what he can, and some Fridays it is good and some Fridays it is thin and twice it was nothing at all and Chuy looked so sick about it that Beto said forget it. There has never been a contract. There has never been a pay stub. There is no piece of paper in the world with Beto's name on it next to that route, and if Chuy died tomorrow, Beto would have driven eight years for a company he cannot prove he worked for.

He has known this the whole time. That is the strange part. It is not a secret. It is not a discovery. He would tell you all of it in one sentence, over a beer, without any particular feeling in his voice, because it is just the arrangement, and the arrangement is family, and family does not do paperwork.

The snag came at his daughter's school. They were filling in a form for a program she wanted, and the form asked for the parent's employer. Beto reached over to write and stopped with the pen down.

His daughter, who is fifteen and quick, said, "Just put Chuy's."

And he said, "Yeah."

And she said, without looking up, "It's kind of weird there's nothing with your name on it."

She was not making a point. She went back to her homework. But Beto sat there at that kitchen table with the pen still down on a blank line, and eight years came and stood in front of him in a way they never had before.

You know a blank like that. Something you do every day of your life that has no record anywhere, that everybody involved would describe warmly, and that would vanish without a trace the moment anybody stopped remembering it out loud.

The Van With Somebody Else's Name

Two clauses nobody preaches

Let me say straight out what I am not going to do here.

I am not going to tell you what your arrangement is, because I cannot see it, and I do not know the people in it. I am not going to give you a verdict on your cousin, your boss, your brother in law or your church. I am not going to tell you to walk away and I am not going to tell you to stay. That is not what tonight is for, and a page cannot see a life.

What I will do is take you to the end of Exodus 2, to two clauses so short that most people read straight past them.

And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.Exodus 2:25

That is the whole verse. Four hundred years compressed into two verbs. God looked. God knew.

And then chapter 3 opens and nothing has happened yet. Pharaoh is fine. The bricks are still going out. There is not one Hebrew in Egypt whose Friday changed because of verse 25. The looking came first, all by itself, with no result attached to it.

That is a strange thing to put in a book, if the book is about a rescue. Unless the being-looked-at is itself the thing, and not a step toward the thing.

You are on record with God tonight, and the record He keeps has never once depended on whether anybody wrote anything down. Exodus 2:25 is where He does the looking before a single circumstance moves, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that off the page and into a kitchen where a man is sitting with a pen down on a blank line.

The old translations struggle with the second clause. God had respect unto them. God knew. God took notice. The Hebrew is doing something plainer than any of them: God, having looked, was not neutral about what He saw.

You have been noticed by the only witness whose testimony does not need a document behind it, and that noticing landed years before you asked for it. It is written that He looked and He knew, and His Spirit is what turns an ancient looking into a present one.

What a record is actually for

Now here is what I want to be careful about, because this is where a message like this goes wrong.

I am not telling you that paperwork does not matter. Paperwork matters. A person who has worked eight years with nothing in writing is in a real position with real consequences, and no amount of spiritual language changes a single one of them. Nothing here is telling you that your situation is fine or that you should be at peace about the practical shape of it.

You are allowed to hold both of those at once, the practical trouble and the settled standing, because Scripture never asks anybody to pretend one of them away. Exodus 2:25 has God looking at a nation whose circumstances were exactly as bad the following morning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a real comfort from turning into a denial.

What I am telling you is what a record is for. A record exists so that somebody who was not there will know what happened. That is its whole function. It is a message to a future stranger.

God is not a future stranger.

You were never dependent on a document to be known, because the One who counts was present for every one of those eight years personally. Exodus 2:25 has Him looking rather than reading, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the difference between those two words land in a chest instead of a head.

And say this before anything else, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the blank line tonight has taken you somewhere dark, or if what you are inside has stopped being unfair and started being unsafe, that is not a thing to carry alone at a kitchen table at midnight. Tell somebody tonight. Your wife, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. I am not telling you one thing about what to do with your work. I am telling you that you will not be left in that kitchen on your own.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks of you tonight, and it is smaller than the size of the thing.

It does not ask you to confront your cousin. It does not ask you to demand anything, file anything, hand in anything, or make a single decision about the work. I cannot see your circumstances and I will not pretend a page can. That is not on tonight's list.

It asks you to stop letting the absence of a document be the verdict.

Because that is what has quietly happened. Not a decision, just a drift. Nothing written down for eight years starts to feel like a statement about what the eight years were worth. It is not a statement. It is only a silence. And silence is not a verdict.

You are not being measured tonight by the one place your name is missing, because God did His looking in Exodus 2:25 without consulting a single file. That is the verse, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a verse hold weight in a room where a man is doing arithmetic at midnight.

You have already been put on the record that decides anything, and that entry was made before you ever thought to ask for it. It is written that God looked and God knew, and His Spirit is the one who takes an ancient entry and reads it out over a present life.

You have not been left to prove yourself into existence, because the entry that matters was made by a witness rather than a clerk. Exodus 2:25 is that entry, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps it from being a comforting idea instead of a standing.

What God then does about the arrangement is His, and I am not going to date it, forecast it or draw it for you. I do not know. What I know is what the verse settles, and the verse settles that the looking happened and it happened first.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, in the yard or the van or the kitchen. Not because the saying moves anything: the moving is His, and He looked long before you opened your mouth. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture puts a mouth in His people to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does with the arrangement afterward is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I am putting no timetable on Him.

  1. Silence around this arrangement, you are not a verdict on what I am worth and you never had that standing. Exodus 2 says God looked and God knew, and the Holy Spirit is saying it over me now. I am not treating the silence as the record anymore.
  2. Fear of having nothing to show, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God looked upon them and had respect unto them while every ledger in Egypt still said nothing, and the same Spirit who carried that verse carries this one, so my name being missing from a file is not my name being missing from His.
  3. Lord, You looked and You knew, and Exodus 2:25 is where You did it before anybody asked. I thank You that eight years of unwritten work were on Your record the entire time, and by Your Spirit I am done reading the blank line as the truth about me.
