Twenty-two years. That is the number, and it is the reason this is hard.
Dionne and Alexis met at nineteen. Same first job, same terrible apartment, and there is not one significant thing that has happened to either of them since that the other did not know about within the hour.
Dionne got out of her situation in 2021. Alexis is in one now. Not the same shape, but the same architecture: an arrangement that has quietly taken over a life, with a set of explanations attached to it that Dionne recognizes because she used to say them.
She has tried three times.
The first time Alexis changed the subject. The second time Alexis said, "I know you mean well." The third time, last September, Alexis said, "I am not you," and it was not shouted and it was not cruel and it ended the conversation for good.
They still talk every other day. They talk about everything. There is one subject in a twenty-two-year friendship that is now permanently closed, and both of them know it, and neither of them has ever named it.
Here is the day it caught.
Alexis called about something completely unrelated, laughing, and in the middle of the call said, "You know what he is like," in the tone people use for a small charming fault.
And Dionne said, "Mm."
And Alexis carried on.
And Dionne sat with the phone against her ear for about forty more minutes and said absolutely nothing about it, the way she has for a year, and afterward stood in her own kitchen and could not decide whether what she had just done was love or cowardice.
You know that. Somebody you love will not hear it, and you have stopped saying it, and you have no idea whether stopping was the right thing or the easy thing.

I have prayed for thee
Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.
I am not going to tell you to try a fourth time. I am not going to tell you to leave it. I do not know Alexis, I do not know the situation, and I am not going to hand a woman instructions about her oldest friend from behind a screen. And I am not going to tell you that she will see it, because I do not know that.
What I will do is take you to a conversation Jesus has with a man who is about to do something disastrous.
He knows what Peter is going to do. He says so in the same breath. And here is what He leads with:
But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.Luke 22:32
I have prayed for thee.
Not: do not do it. Not: here is how to avoid it. Not a strategy, a warning system, or a plan. He tells Peter that He has already prayed, and then He talks about what will be true on the other side.
And then Peter goes and does it anyway, exactly as predicted, within hours.
You are standing where Christ stood with somebody who was not going to hear it, and what He did was pray and say so. Luke 22:32 has the intercession stated as already accomplished before the failure had happened, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a kitchen with a phone in it.
And notice what the praying was for. Not that Peter would avoid it. That thy faith fail not. He prayed about the thing underneath, the thing that would still be there afterward, rather than about the event.
You have something to pray for that is not the outcome, and Jesus modeled praying past the event rather than about it. It is written that He prayed that the faith would not fail, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an ancient aim a present possibility.
Stopping is not cowardice
Now let me be careful here, because this is where somebody gets hurt.
Three attempts is not a small number and the third one ended with a sentence that closed a door. Dionne did not stop because it was easy. She stopped because a woman she has loved for twenty-two years told her, plainly and without heat, that the subject was finished.
That is not cowardice. That is respecting a person's own account of themselves, which is a thing love does.
You are not being accused of cowardice, and Scripture never once requires a person to keep saying a thing that has been refused. Matthew 10:14 has Jesus telling His own disciples what to do when a word is not received, and none of it is to say it louder, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a respectful stop from being read as a failure of nerve.
And here is the other half, which is the part that has her standing in a kitchen.
She is afraid that saying nothing means she has quietly agreed. That every mm is a small endorsement. That twenty-two years of honesty has been traded for a comfortable call.
It has not been. Silence about a subject is not agreement with a situation, and the fact that she cannot say it does not mean she is pretending it is fine.
You have not agreed to anything by being quiet, and Scripture never treats an unspoken conviction as a surrendered one. Luke 22:32 has Christ holding a full and accurate view of what was coming without once making Peter agree with it first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a held tongue from becoming a changed mind.
Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the year has gone somewhere heavier than helpless, or if the calls have started to cost more than they give, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. A friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. And if you ever believe Alexis is in danger, then the ordinary thing is to call for help where you live rather than manage it alone. That is me refusing to leave you in that kitchen by yourself.
So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than twenty-two years.
It does not ask you to raise it again. It does not ask you to stay quiet forever either. It does not ask you to work out whether the silence was right, which is a question that has no answer available tonight.
It asks you to say to God what you would say to her if you could.
All of it. The whole sentence that has gone unsaid for a year, out loud, in a room with nobody in it. Not as a rehearsal. As the place where it actually goes.
And then to pray the thing underneath rather than the outcome, the way He did for Peter.
You are entitled to say the unsaid sentence somewhere, because Luke 22 shows Christ carrying full knowledge of a situation to the Father rather than to the person. That is the passage, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unsayable thing sayable in the right direction.
You have been holding your friend for a year in a way she cannot see, and the holding did not require her permission. It is written that He said I have prayed for thee, in the past tense, before anything had happened, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient intercession into a kitchen with a phone on the counter.
You are not endorsing anything by being quiet, and a closed subject has never once been the same as a changed conviction. Luke 22:32 has Christ knowing exactly what was coming and saying only that He had prayed, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that combination possible in a person.
Whether Alexis ever hears it, and when, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. What tonight settles is where the sentence goes.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the kitchen with the light on. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He has been holding your friend for longer than either of you have been alive. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about Alexis, and when, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Sentence I cannot say to her, you are not the only thing I have and you never were. Luke 22 says He told a man I have prayed for you, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
- Fear that my silence is agreement, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that Christ knew exactly what Peter was about to do and said only that He had prayed for him, and the same Spirit who carried that account carries me, so a held tongue is not a changed mind.
- Lord, You said I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not, and Luke 22:32 is where You aimed past the event at the thing underneath it. I thank You that the praying was already done before anything went wrong, and by Your Spirit I am saying her name out loud tonight.
